Boatload of illegal immigrants rescued, then arrested

PORT KLANG: Sixty-one illegal immigrants trying to get home to Indonesia for Hari Raya had a close shave when the tugboat they were in started to fill with water.
Luckily for them, the overloaded boat was spotted by marine police officers patrolling the area on Friday.
Port Klang marine police deputy chief ASP Nordin Osman said the officers, on special operations for the festive season, had stopped and inspected the boat at 6.50am near the Straits Rawa Sea stretch of Pulau Ketam.
He said the Indonesian boat did not bear any registration number and was operated by a tekong and two assistants.
The boat had the capacity to take only 15 to 20 people, but 61 people including women and children, as well as their luggage, were travelling in the vessel, said Nordin.
He said the boat was heading towards Dumai, Indonesia, and each passenger had paid about RM500 to RM700 for the trip.
A total of 36 men, 17 women and eight children aged between one and 50 were detained. Nordin said operations to nab those travelling back to their country illegally would be continued throughout the festive season.
The illegal immigrants were detained under Section 6 (1) (C) of the Immigration Act for illegally entering and living in Malaysia.
